چکیده

We present an orthogonal concentration method to further confine sunlight within planar solar collectors. Radial-oriented couplers create micro-optic solar concentrators with >375x geometric concentration and a 20% reduction in guiding loss. ©2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (220.1770) Concentrators; (230.7400) Waveguides, slab

Orthogonal and secondary concentration in planar micro-optic solar collectors.

Planar micro-optic concentrators are passive optical structures which combine a lens array with faceted microstructures to couple sunlight into a planar slab waveguide. Guided rays propagate within the slab to edge-mounted photovoltaic cells. This paper provides analysis and preliminary experiments describing modifications and additions to the geometry which increase concentration ratios along ...

Planar micro-optic solar concentrator.

We present a new approach to solar concentration where sunlight collected by each lens in a two-dimensional lens array is coupled into a shared, planar waveguide using localized features placed at each lens focus. This geometry yields a thin, flat profile for moderate concentration systems which may be fabricated by low-cost roll manufacture. We provide analyses of tradeoffs and show optimized ...

Two-axis solar tracking accomplished through small lateral translations.

High-concentration solar-power optics require precise two-axis tracking. The planar micro-optic solar concentrator uses a lenslet array over a planar waveguide with small reflective facets at the focal point of each lenslet to couple incident light into the waveguide. The concentrator can use conventional tracking, tilting the entire assembly, but the system geometry also allows tracking by sma...

Experimental Investigation of the Thermal Performance of Vacuum Tube Solar Collectors (VTSC) Using Alumina Nanofluids

The enhancement of the thermal performance of Vacuum Tube Solar Collectors (VTSC) was studied by using alumina nanofluid as working fluid. VTSC is a simple and commonly utilized type of collector. This study established the heat transfer experimental model of all glass VTSCs used in a forced-circulation solar water heating system using alumina nanofluid as base fluid. Al2O3 (with an average par...

Enhancing photovoltaic output power by 3-band spectrum-splitting and concentration using a diffractive micro-optic.

We report the enhancement of photovoltaic output power by separating the incident spectrum into 3 bands, and concentrating these bands onto 3 different photovoltaic cells. The spectrum-splitting and concentration is achieved via a thin, planar micro-optical element that demonstrates high optical efficiency over the entire spectrum of interest. The optic (which we call a polychromat) was designe...
